Week-3 Reading Comprehension • Types of reading (intensive & extensive) • Reading skills (skimming, scanning, previewing, predicting etc) • Application of reading skills in academic environment • Identifying good reading sources
Week-4 Dictionary Skills • How to use a dictionary for meanings • For checking appropriate pronunciation • Phonetic Symbols (Phonemic chart English sounds) • Practice for using mobile phone dictionary apps and online dictionary sources (monolingual and bilingual)
Week-5 First Sessional Examination • paper and its critique • Reflections on the course covered • Assignments + Quizzes critique
Week-6 Writing Skills • Prewriting Techniques • Writing Process • Types of Writing
Week-7 Paragraph Development • Types of paragraphs • Top-down order • Coherence (with reference to 7C principles of communication) • Exploring connections between Reading & Writing
Week-8 Summary (precis) Writing • Guidelines • Practice on bigger pieces of text • Application of summary writing in real life communication environment
Week-9 Essay Writing • Important guidelines • Types of Essays • Application and practice
Week-10 Message Composition • Letter Writing (types, formats and contents) • Memoranda writing • Composing good emails
Week-11 Oral Communication and Public Speech • Important guidelines • Preparation of contents • Delivery • Facing crowds • Adapting to audience response
Week-12 Second sessional Examination • Papers and critique • Assignments and Quizzes (a round-up) • Reflections of the progress in course
