  3. What is a Persuasive Essay? • Convinces a reader to think one way • Or • Convinces a reader to take some action

  4. Choosing a Topic for a Persuasive Essay • Is it controversial? • Do I have a strong opinion? • Do I know enough? • Do I have a personal connection? • Will it be interesting to my readers?

  5. A Persuasive Thesis Statement Contains: • The topic • Your opinion • A course of action, either implied or stated • The reason this action is necessary.

  6. Emphatic Order • Show your outline to a partner. • Explain your reasons for this order. • Do you think the order is strong? Pg 23. Could it be improved?

  7. Language for Introducing Counterarguments

  8. Organization of Body Paragraphs • Should contain three basic elements: • 1) Counterargument • 2) Argument • 3) Support • - This is the common order, but feel free to structure your paragraphs differently.

  9. Types of Support: • Personal Experience: • Expert Opinion: Another person’s opinion who knows a lot! • Examples: • Analogy: Compares to another similar situation • Facts and Statistics: • Reason: uses logic to explain point • Emotion: makes an emotional appeal
