Key Concepts • Your training station is the location of your work-base learning. • A social security card is required for work. Depending on your age, you may also need a work permit. • A training agreement outlines the purpose of the work-based program and defines the responsibility of everyone involved. • The training plan lists attitudes, skills, and knowledge that you plan to learn during the work experience. • Several laws cover the fair labor practices and safe labor practices. • The study skills you use in the classroom are just as important as the job skills you will learn. Work-Based Students • As student and part-time employee your schedule is very tight. Your time management skills need to be very good to do a good job at work and keep your grades up. • Training Station- Is the place of employment learning skills at a particular workplace. • Social Security Card and Work Permits • To work legally in the United State all employees must have a Social Security Card. • Must have one to open a bank account. • Keep the number private to prevent Identify theft. • Students under the age of 16 must have work permit. Abide by the Training Agreement • During your work experience you will expected to assume the responsibilities outline between you, Miami Beach Senior, and your employer. This is called a Training Agreement. • Training Agreement is a contract. Outlines the purpose of this venture. All parties involved signs to this binding contract. • Training Agreements serve the following purposes: • To assure the employer that the student is committed to the work experience. • To assure the student that the company is committed to training the student to do the job. • To assure the parents or guardians that the student in a well planed educational experience. • To assure the STW coordinator that all parties understand their responsibilities and committed to the students successful work experience. Know the Law • Fair Labor Laws Act • 1938- Deals with the relationship between employers and employees. • All interstate companies and international commerce are covered by this act. • Education and health care are covered as well. Mr. Dave Schmidt
Minimum Wages • In 1800’s companies exploited employees to long hours of work and low wages. To prevent this exploitation the following laws were past by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) • Minimum Wage • Is the lowest hourly rate of pay that most employees must receive. • There are exempted employees for minimum wages: • Food Service Workers • Waiters, busboy, bartenders • Employees that are in training. • Currently minimum pay is $7.25 an hour. Fair Labor Practices • Overtime Pay • To prevent employers working employees long hours without benefiting the employee Overtime was amendment • Minimum pay for overtime is 1.5 times the regular rate. • Overtime rate is used when an employee works over 40 hours in a week. • Equal Pay • An amendment the Equal Pay Act of 1963 • Employees get paid the same pay for the same work, no matter what gender you are. • Exemptions for this are: • Seniority • Skills • Productivity • Services performed • Shift work • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Mr. Dave Schmidt
Child Labor Laws • The Fair Labor Standards Act. Is extremely careful to employers working with children. • Anybody over 18 years of age can work at any job for any number of hours. • 16 and 17 year old employees can work at any nonhazardous job for any number of hours. • Hazardous jobs include: • Operating motor vehicles • Power-driven machinery • Working with explosives • And jobs in construction. • 14 and 15 year old employees must have work permit. • Can work any of the nonhazardous jobs. • Work 3 hours per school day. • 23 hours per school week. Safe Labor Practices • To prevent the “sweatshops” that happen in the 1800’s • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was formed. • To make sure the workplace is a safe place, to prevent accidents and injuries. Mr. Dave Schmidt
Study and Learn • For student to be successful in the STW program the student must balance between: • School • Work • Students must complete class assignments and get the best grades possible to stay in the program. • Students also need to work hard at their employment to learn skills and advance at their workplace. • Students who succeed must do the following: • Practice good study habits: • Keep separate notebooks for each class. Stay organize! • Make sure you understand the assignment. • Complete ALL your class assignments each day! • Set time and place to study. • Study immediately when time. • Study in small segment of time. • Two 30 minute session is better than 1 hour session. • Do the assignments that are due sooner first. • Then do the harder assignments next. • Use your computer and Internet to work quickly! Organize Your Schedule • Time management skills are at a premium • Develop a daily schedule. • Prioritize your work! • Ranking work by importance and timeliness. • You will become a more productive person! • Improve your reading skills! • Basic skill of your education is reading. • Take speed reading skills courses. • Reading Plus • Take notes to remember. • Participate in class. • Pay attention to the teacher. • Be a good listener. • Teacher will give you a good idea what to study!
