  3. What are Steroids? • Any of numerous naturally occurring or synthetic fat-soluble organic compounds • Have a basis of 17 carbon atoms • Include the sterols and bile acids • Adrenal and sex hormones • Certain natural drugs such as digitalis compounds • Precursors of certain vitamins

  4. Types of Steroids • Anabolic: group of synthetic hormones that are derivatives of testosterone • Used medically (to promote tissue growth) • Abused by athletes to increase the size/strength of muscles and improve endurance

  5. Types of Steroids • Androgenic: A hormone that has masculinizing effects • Stimulation of the male reproductive organs • Development of male secondary sex characteristics

Terminology • Aromatize: a reaction in the body where excess testosterone or androgens are converted to estrogen  • BlackMarket: an underground source where most athletes get steroids  • Catabolic: the breakdown of tissue • Clean: a person that has tested negative for anabolic steroids Linked to disease

  7. Terminology • Cycle: period of time an athlete is on the steroid • Dart: Needle • Estrogen: female sex hormone responsible for secondary sexual characteristics in females  • Orals: Steroids that have been taken through the mouth *This can also be present in males!
