  2. Population Growth The world population has increased rapidly in the past two centuries, creating many new challenges

Some Facts……. • The first billion took from the dawn of humanity until 1830. • The second billion took only 100 years -- from 1830 to 1930. • Three billion more arrived in the next 60 years. • The next billion will take only 13 years (yes, just 13 years!) • Every second, 5 people are born and 2 people die, a net gain of 3 people • The world’s population is growing by 200,000 people a day.

  4. More Facts……. • 90 % of the World’s population is in the northern hemisphere. • 50% live in cities. • 50% lives in Asia, it is about 20% of earth’s land area.

  8. Movement: • Internal Migration: Movement within a country • Urbanization: movement from farms and villages to cities • The global proportion of urban population rose dramatically from 13% in 1900, to 29% in 1950, to 49% in 2005.

  9. Immigration vs Emigration • Emigrate (Exit): people leave a country • Immigrate (Go Into a Country): when people come into a country. *If I move from the U.S. to Canada, I emigrate from the U.S. and immigrate to Canada. To Canada, I am an immigrant.
