When you’re ready to pay, you complete an order form, then enter your credit/debit card details. Money is deducted from your account and an e-mail is sent to confirm your purchase.

  4. Alarm system Security alarms are electric circuits built into entry points. They set off an alarm when a door or window is opened. In a closed-circuit system, the alarm sounds when the circuit is broken. In an open-circuit system, the alarm sounds when the circuit is completed.

  5. Wireless application protocol (WAP) Wireless application protocol is a standard for applications that use wireless communication. It allows you to access the Internet from your mobile phone, using WAP, in the same way that you access the Internet from your computer with a browser such as Internet Explorer.

  6. Remote control It controls things from a distance. It sends instructions to a machine via electrical or radio signals. To change the channel on your TV, you point the device at the TV and press the button which corresponds to the channel you want.

  7. Biometric passport Each biometric passport has a photo and a micro chip. The microchip holds information about the passport holder, such as facial measurement, personal details and fingerprints. This information is encrypted and can only be read by special scanners.

  8. Monitoring device It is attached to a patient. It measures how a particular part of the body is working and displays the information on a screen.

  9. Global positioning system (GPS) receiver You enter the name of where you want to go and it will plot a journey for you. GPS receivers work by locating satellites in the Global Positioning System. They employ a principle called “trilateration” to work out the distance to, and between, each satellite. This enables them to work out their own position and how to get from there to another place.
