Welcome to theArkansas River Historical Society The Arkansas River Historical Society seeks to preserve history and insure public awareness of the Arkansas River and the development of its basin. Through the acquisition, research, interpretation, and display of artifacts, and the development of educational programs, the contribution of the river to the future will be secured by the preservation of its past.
The Arkansas River Historical Society Museum is located in the City of Tulsa – Rogers County Port Authority Building at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa
Historical Displays tell the story of the river and the navigation system.
The many benefits of the waterway are emphasized in graphic displays.
Exhibits include an overview of the steamboat era and models of modern ocean-going vessels.
A lobby aerial photo of the Port provides a starting reference for driving tours.
Another goal of the Historical Society is to honor those who did so much to make this navigation system a reality. This is also achieved by our annual Arkansas River Hall of Fame awards.
Each year we provide educational tours for thousands of students and adults.
In 2004 a small park and picnic area was created for the convenience of individuals and tour groups.
The Historical Society is the source of exhibits at the visitor’s center at Lock & Dam 18. We also have a traveling exhibit we take to conferences, schools, and international cultural events.
The Charley Border was the Port’s chief workboat for nearly 30 years.
In 2004 it was moved from the channel to dry-dock in preparation for it’s new career.
In 2006, after renovation, it was moved to the educational center site.
It will become the focal point of a new Maritime Educational Center. Charley Border Towboat Exhibit and Educational Center complex.
