Grapes • Arkansas is the oldest grape juice and wine producing state in the southern United States. • Grapes were first grown commercially in Arkansas at Altus in the 1870’s. • Arkansas makes over $2 million from grapes, grape juice, and wine. • Wiederkehr Wine Cellars and Vineyard and Post Familie Vinyards and Winery are both located in Altus.
Tourism • Mount Magazine is Arkansas’s highest mountain at 2,753 feet tall. • Toltec Mounds Archaeological State Park is located in Scott. These are Arkansas’s tallest remaining Native American mounds. • The Fort Smith National Historic Site includes the remains of the original 1817 fort, as well as Judge Isaac C. Parker’s courtroom, jail, and gallows.
Natural Resources • Bauxite is a mineral used to make aluminum. America’s massive aluminum industry has roots here, in Bauxite, AR. • Natural gas was first discovered in Fort Smith in 1887. The first commercial development began in 1902 in Mansfield. • There are coal mining companies in Greenwood. Arkansas’s coal is used to produce steam to power electric generating plants and steam locomotives & to heat homes and buildings.
Natural Resources • Soybeans are grown between Russellville and Dardanelle. Soy is used in making salad dressing, margarine, candles, crayons, shampoo, lipstick, and ice cream. • Cotton is grown in Pulaski County. • Sand and Gravel is found in Little Rock and at Arkhola Sand & Gravel in Fort Smith. Sand and Gravel is used for concrete products, including block, brick, and pipe, in making asphalt, and in snow and ice control. • There is a nuclear power plant in Russellville.
