Schedule • January 23, 2012 (Today): Course start • February 7, 2012: Work plan seminars • Each student presents their thesis topic and outline for the work. 20 minutes per thesis including questions • Expected outcome: Each course attendant and tutor should have been informed about and understood the objectives of the thesis projects • Time-range: 13.15-15.30 • Room: John von Neumann • Compulsory to attend! March 20, 2012: Mid-term report • Each student presents their progress so far. 20 minutes per thesis including questions • A two-pages written summary of the progress should accompany the presentation. • Expected outcome: Each course attendant and tutor should have been informed about what has been done so far and what is left to for each thesis project. • Time-range: 13.15-15.30 • Room: John von Neumann • Compulsory to attend!

May 22, 2012: Decision about admission to defend thesis and appointment of opponents • Course responsible decides for each thesis (upon advice from supervisors) whether it can be presented at the final seminar • This decision is based on whether there is enough written to perform a reasonable opposition on the manuscript • At this moment the opponents will be appointed • May 29, 2012: Deadline for manuscript submission • The manuscript should be sent to the opponent and to all supervisors (Anders, Mattias, Oleg)

June 7, 2012: Defence seminar • Each student presents their thesis for a maximum of 25 minutes, followed by the opposition (max. 25 minutes) and a general discussion. • Time range: 08.15 – 12.30 • Room: John von Neumann • After the seminar (or in breaks) each supervisor should summarize for the student what is left to be adjusted in the manuscript • Compulsory to attend the whole seminar! • June 18, 2012: Deadline for submission of adjusted manuscript

About the supervision • The normal frequency of meetings with the supervisor is every second week. • It is mainly the student who puts “the agenda” for the meeting, i.e. you are expected to have some progress to show and to have prepared questions. • At each meeting it is wise to agree on what are the next steps • You are expected to successively show progress in your report writing: • Start writing very early! • Submit manuscript parts to the supervisor in due time before the meeting (to facilitate feed-back) Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) Linköpings universitet, Sweden

  7. About the grading • Each thesis is graded using the ECTS-scale (A-F) • The grading is based on 1. The Scientific quality of the thesis (adequacy and originality of the methods used, significance of obtained results, discourse skill) • n.b. “originality” is not equivalent to the development of new methods, rather that the methods used have not previously been applied on the kind of data used 2.
