Title The Topic of Change throughout Entertainment Alexis H English II 10.23.13 3rd Period
Introduction • My universal topic is change. Change is a topic found universally. At one point or another everyone endures change. This change can occur personally as in one’s mind or body, or it can be a person’s surroundings. I will address some changes of events, desires for change, and change within people. • Change can be gradual or sudden depending on the situation.
Story from Class: Text to Text Connection • The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World • In the tale of The Handsomest Drowned Man, the people are unprepared for the arrival of Esteban’s large corpse washing up on the shore. The town bands together to make adjustments, and change, to accommodate Esteban’s great size. In the process of making the physical changes to their town/homes, the people also change their way of thinking
2nd Text-to-Text Connection • The Alchemist • Santiago changes a lot throughout the course of The Alchemist. He discovers more of himself and adapts to the events he faced over the course of his journey. One example in particular comes from the very beginning of the book, when Santiago changes his mind about studying to be a priest and chooses to become a Sheppard instead so he can travel. Another example would include an event from the end of the story; when Santiago reaches the Pyramids but then realizes his treasure was back at his home all along.
3rd Text-to-Text Connection • I Have a Dream Speech- Martin Luther • In Martin Luther King Jr.’ s speech, I Have a Dream, he addresses his desire for change. His desire to have society become accepting of the idea of equality for, both, blacks and whites is a great example of a desire for change. • http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkihaveadream.htm
3rd Text-to-Text Connection • Freaky Friday • The movie, Freaky Friday, is a wonderful example of change. The movie is about a mother and daughter that do not get along and end up switching bodies. They then have to adjust to each other’s everyday surroundings and realize what the other deals with on a daily basis. After changing bodies and learning about each other, they are switched back into their own body with a changed perspective of each other.
Text-to-Self Connection • The universal topic of change is very evident in my life. This is because I have dealt with change throughout my entire life. I have been to seven different schools, including this one, and have moved approximately 13 times. Each school is different, as well as each state is different. It is a big change from place to place, but it has changed my way of thinking as well. It has taught me to appreciate people and places because you never know when you will have to leave again.
Conclusion • In conclusion, the topic of change is found universally in all different kinds of works; whether it be found in books, movies, or speeches. Change is existent everywhere, sometimes you just have to think on a different, deeper level to discover it.
