  5. Fire Extinguishers • Important to have in any home, shop, or workplace. • Categorized into 4 types depending on what class of fire they are designed to put out.

  6. Classes of fires • Class A • Fires that involve ordinary combustible materials (paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics) • Class B • Fires that involve flammable or combustible liquids (gasoline, kerosene, grease, and oil) • Class C • Fires that involve electrical equipment (appliances, wiring, circuit breakers, outlets) • Class D • Fires commonly found in a chemical laboratory • Class K • Fires that involve cooking oils, trans-fats, or fats in cooking appliances

Types of fire extinguishers • Water extinguishers- filled with water and pressurized with air • Class A fires only • Dry chemical extinguishers- filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen • Class A, B, and C fires • BC • ABC • Carbon dioxide extinguishers- contains CO2 and highly pressurized • Class B and C fires

Extension Cords • Length of flexible electrical power cable with a plug on one end and one or more sockets on the other end • Incorporate safety features: • Polarized plug and receptacle • Grounded terminals • Power-on indicator • Fusible link • Residual-current device (ground-fault circuit interrupter) • Extension cords have either 2 or 3 wires • Hot wire & neutral wire • Hot, neutral, and ground

  10. Safety • Do’s • Check the wattage rating. • Keep extension cords away from water. • Pull on the plug, not the cord. • Unplug when not in use. • Don’ts • Plug one extension cord into another. • Overload cords. • Overheat an extension cord. • Cover a cord with anything.
