What you need to do to complete your Bachelor of Commerce • To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Commerce degree you need to: • Satisfy points requirements • Complete the compulsory subjects • Satisfy the quantitative requirement • Complete at least one major from the commerce discipline areas • Meet prerequisite/corequisites as required Bachelor of Commerce-Course Information Session 2013

Commerce Component • These are the subjects across the business discipline areas: accounting, actuarial economics, finance, management and marketing. • All Commerce students must complete a minimum commerce points requirements as below: • ......these must include the five compulsory subjects • ECON10004 Introductory Microeconomics • ECON10003 Introductory Macroeconomics • ECON10005 Quantitative Methods 1 • MGMT 20001 Organisational Behavior • And one level-2 quantitative subject: • ECON20003 Quantitative Methods 2 • OR equivalent • Actuarial: • Finance: Bachelor of Commerce-Course Information Session 2013

6. What is a major? • A sequence of subjects in a particular discipline from an introductory level through to an advanced level. All students must complete three specified level 3 subjects to complete a major. Professional Accreditation • The Bachelor of Commerce degree allows students to meet accreditation requirements specified by accounting, actuarial and finance bodies Accounting: To practice as a professional accountant in Australia, graduates are required to become a member of one of the three professional accounting bodies. See page 10 of the BCom Planner for further information • Actuarial: • The Institute of Actuaries Australia is the professional actuarial accreditation body in Australia. Students must complete certain subjects to continue onto accreditation. See page 12 of the BCom Planner for further information • Finance: • The Finance and Treasury Association accreditation gives recognition to finance subjects in the BCom as part of their membership and accreditation requirements. Breadth Component: • Breadth studies are opportunity for you to develop expertise outside of the core commerce component. • Students can select subjects of their own choice or follow a specific track of subjects • Certain breadth studies are required for accounting accreditation and actuarial accreditation • Approved sequences of breadth studies can lead to graduate courses including engineering or psychology Points requirements: Bachelor of Commerce-Course Information Session 2013

DELA What is DELA? • DELA is a diagnostic tool that assesses your strengths and weaknesses in academic reading, writing and listening over 2 hours. • Why you should sit DELA? • Doing well at university requires excellent academic language skills – a ‘step up’ from what you have been used to at secondary school. This is why the University of Melbourne is asking many students to take the Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA) when they commence an undergraduate degree. Make a Yearly Planner A wall planner not a pocket planner Plot in all assignment deadlines, presentations, etc. Work back 4-5 weeks and write “Begin assignment 1 NOW” etc. Do this for all assessed tasks Put wall planner where you see it every day!
