Synoptic Maps of Magnetic Field from MDI/WSO Magnetograms

This study by Y. Liu, J. T. Hoeksema, X.P. Zhao, and R. M. Larson from Stanford University focuses on creating synoptic maps of the magnetic field using MDI/WSO magnetograms. The study covers various methods such as offset correction, rescaling, remapping, and correction for differential rotation and polar field. The authors also evaluate rescaling methods and highlight the advantages of WSO data.

  1. Synoptic Maps of Magnetic Field from MDI/WSO Magnetograms Y. Liu, J. T. Hoeksema, X. P. Zhao, R. M. Larson – Stanford University yliu@solar.stanford.edu

  2. MDI synoptic maps • Individual magnetogram: • Correct offset; • Rescale single magnetogram; • Remap magnetograms and form the synoptic maps (link); • Correction for differential rotation (need new definition); • Correction for polar field (link); • Generate synoptic frame, and examine the influence from non-uniform noise (link); • Evaluate rescaling methods (link).

  3. WSO synoptic maps • Magnetograms remaps in the Carrington coordinate; • Select the central strip of every single magnetogram, and form a synoptic chart. The size of the strip depends on how many data available;

  4. WSO data • Advantage of WSO data: • High accuracy; • Excellent determination of the magnetic zero level; • A consistent thirty-year time series of the low-resolution large-scale magnetic field measurement without any significant instrumentation modification.

  5. Applications From Arge (2005) PFSS
