National Museum Of African American History and Culture Goes Green With Solar System 1888 Press Release - Smithsonian Installs Solar PV System at the newly constructed National Museum of African American History and Culture. Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV - Solar Solution has teamed up with the Smithsonian Institute and other local contractors to install solar on the newly constructed National Museum of African American History and Culture! This beautiful building boasts a nearly-100kW solar array that will help to offset its power usage when it opens in 2016. The NMAAHC will be the first Smithsonian museum to have solar panels and it hopes to serve as a model for sustainability and environmental stewardship. The Sunpower panels atop the museum are just one of several steps that the NMAAHC is taking to earn the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
