  1. Welcome to Jefferson and Gabrielino Math Night! COMMON CORE MATHEMATICS PATHWAYS Grades 6-12

  2. WELCOME and INTRODUCTIONS • Matthew Arnold • James Tang • Jean Wong • Sharron Heinrich • Eric Hoenigmann • Maria Morales • Jorge Salas DEC • Mayra Perez • Christiane Elhabr Gervais • Jennifer Vargas Jefferson Middle School Gabrielino High School

  3. The Driving Force of Educational Change:

  4. Common Core History: Readiness Standards • In 2009, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) committed to developing a set of standards that would help prepare students for success in college and career. • In September 2009, College and Career Readiness standards were released. • This work became the foundation for the Common Core.

  5. Historical Overview • Work teams were established to design a cohesive set of standards for K-12. • Work groups included parents, educators, content experts, researchers, national organizations and community groups. • The standards were officially released in June, 2010; 48 states have adopted. • California adopted our version in August, 2010.

  6. Paradigm Shift from California Content Standards (CCS)to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) CCSS offers greater depth and complexity.

  7. Math Readiness Is The Goal • Current math standards emphasize deep understanding of concepts, application of skills and solving novel (non-routine) problems. • Basic math computation, memorization of formulas, plugging numbers into equations to derive an answer do not prepare students for advanced level math courses in high school and beyond. • Goal: provide opportunities to every student to access calculus by her/his senior year.

  8. Common Core MathBackground Information Standards for Mathematics weredeveloped to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding in mathematics to be college and career ready when they complete high school. 2013 California County Superintendents Educational Services Association High School Mathematics Parent Handbook for the Traditional Pathway

  9. Standards for Mathematical Practice • 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively • 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • 4. Model with mathematics 2011 CA County Superintendents Educational Services Association

  10. Standards for Mathematical Practice • 5. Use appropriate tools strategically • 6. Attend to precision • 7. Look for and make use of structure • 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning 2011 CA County Superintendents Educational Services Association

  11. How is SGUSD Meeting the Challenge? • Secondary Math Common Core Committee • Common Core Aligned Curriculum • 2015 Math Textbook Adoption for K-5 and JMS • Math Textbook Adoption for GHS in 2015-16 • Thorough research and discussion of best practices • Development of Mathematics Pathways for Grades 6-12 to meet individual student needs

  12. Why are new Mathematics Pathways needed? • Reflect changes in California’s Mathematics Framework and California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics • Re-alignment of standards requires a realignment of our delivery model for mathematics education

  13. Our Pathways Provide Multiple Opportunities to Address Individual Student Needs • College Prep. Path • Accelerated Path • Acceleration point offered at JMS • Acceleration point offered GHS • Choices to meet student interest • Several paths to access Calculus

  14. JMS College Prep. Pathway • Grade 6: CC Math 6 • Grade 7: CC Math 7 • Grade 8: CC Math 8

  15. JMS Accelerated Pathway • Grade 6: CC Math 6 • Grade 7: Accelerated CC Math 7/8* Grade 8: Accelerated CC Algebra 1 *Acceleration point for JMS: This rigorous course accelerates two years of math content into a yearlong course.

  16. JMS Accelerated Pathway Placement Guidelines Pre-requisites for placement into Math 7/8 • Average grade in CC Math 6 = A • Placement test (MDTP: Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project) score 90% or above • Average Benchmark Results of 90% or above • Consider student readiness accelerated pathway with 3 years of mathematics taught in two years.

  17. JMS Placement Guidelines Pre-requisites for placement into CC Algebra 1 • Average grade in CC Math 7/8 = B or above • Placement test score 80% or above • Average Benchmark results of 80% or above • Accredited summer school in CC Math 8 • Grade = A or B • Placement test 80% or above on JMS placement test

  18. GHS College Prep. Pathway • Algebra 1 • Geometry • Algebra 2 *SGUSD has a 2 year math requirement at this time. Three years are required to be UC/CSU eligible. Graduation requirements are currently under review.

  19. GHS Accelerated Pathway • Honors Geometry • Honors Algebra 2 • Honors Calculus with Pre-Calculus* • AP Calculus AB or BC *Acceleration point for High School: This rigorous course accelerates more than one year of math content into a yearlong course that will prepare students for AP Calculus AB or BC as the subsequent course.

  20. Placement Guidelines- GHS • Grade 9 students who complete CC Math 8 in Grade 8 shall be placed in Algebra 1. • Students must pass Common Core math courses with a grade of “C” or better to earn A-G credit.

  21. Placement Guidelines- GHS Grade 9 student placement in Geometry: • Successful completion of CC Algebra 1 in Grade 8 • Scored Proficient in the Geometry Readiness MDTP and grade of “A” or “B” in Algebra 1 • Scored Proficient in the Geometry Readiness MDTP and earned a “C” in Algebra 1

  22. Assessment System Comparisons • SBAC • Grades 3-8, and 11 • Computer adaptive • Constructed response, performance tasks and some selected response CST/STAR • Grades 2-11, writing in grades 4 & 7 • Paper and pencil • Only multiple choice (and writing in grades 4, 7)
