Accessing the Healthcare Databases Search • You still access search on the NHS Evidence journals and databases page • Simple and Advanced options available
Simple Search You will see this screen if you select the simple search without logging into ATHENS • You can search on MEDLINE from PubMed • Or you can log in to ATHENS to search the other databases.
Advanced search – navigation • Although the database selection screen looks different, you have the same choices: • To select databases using the checkboxes or by clicking on the titles • To select or unselect all databases • Use the About links to find out more about a database
Advanced search – navigation There are two ways of navigating the different HDAS screens. You can still use the Breadcrumb trail, or you can use the links at the top of the screen. The Saved Search, Alerts and Recover Searches screens still have the same basic layout and options.

Advanced search – search fields The main search options are now in checkboxes so you can see the options available. You can also select More fields to view and select all the field codes available in the database .
Advanced search – thesaurus options The Browse thesaurus button is now on the right of the search area, to avoid confusion with the Map to thesaurus checkbox You can still search the thesaurus by entering a search term, selecting Map to thesaurus and clicking on Search...
Advanced search - thesaurus screen The Thesaurus screen has been reorganised to make the hierarchy and the selection options clearer The option to select subheadings is now available as a link.
Advanced search – thesaurus subheadings Make your selections and click Apply to return to the thesaurus screen. The tick in the subheadings column changes colour to show you have made a selection.
Advanced search – apply limits • All the old features of the search history display are still available . You can also: • Delete a line using the X • Select the link to Apply Limits to a line to create a new result set ...
Advanced search – limits ... the line number appears in the search box. You can use tabs to apply different limits. Each * shows where you have applied a limit. Select search to create the new result set with the limits you have chosen.
Advanced search – limits You can still apply limits before you perform a search. Just enter your search term, select your limits and select search.
Advanced search – search preview This new feature previews the number of results your current search strategy will return. It can help you spot typos and select search words and limits to get the number of results you want.
Advanced search – view results The results view is mainly unchanged. The search history still shows above the results, but you can hide it by selecting “Collapse view”.
Advanced search – copy to clipboard The button for copying selected results to your clipboard is now at the bottom of the page, with the email and export options.
