What is a search engine? A Search Engine on the Internet: • can have unreliable information (opinions, changes by users like on Wikipedia, etc.) • can make you pay a fee for valuable content (like magazine or newspaper articles) • can have annoying pop-up ads, flashing banners, and advertisements on web pages.
What is a database? • an online tool that has information organized into categories so that you can easily search for information
What is a database? Databases: • work through the Internet, but are not Internet sites. • are published by reliable companies, like book publishers. • provide access to information, articles, and more. • use very flexible search methods. • in FBISD are "free“ for you to use; just go to the FBISD home page> departments> library> online resources
keywords • word(s) you type into a search box in order to get a list of web sites that contain information about that topic • help(s) you find exactly what you are looking for, not everything on the internet that includes that word (or those words) in the topic • For example, “dolphins not Miami” brings up everything about dolphins, but not the Miami Dolphins football team
Use keywords • Using one keyword will result in a large list of web sites on that topic ex)dogs Possible topics: hot dogs dogs (animals) the Dogs (a team) “dogs” (people who are mean to others)
More key words gives you a more specific web site • ex) dogs • gives you lots of web sites on different topics hot dogs • Gives you less web sites to look through and is likely to be about food or people showing off

Activity: What Dog is Best for Me? • Open Internet Explorer. • Go to Sweet Search (http://www.sweetsearch.com/) • Type dog into the search box. • Are all of the results about pet dogs? • How can we narrow our search so that we only get information about types of dogs?
