In your own words, describe what happens in the photoelectric effect? • Light energy goes in to the photovoltaic surface. (Higher frequency= More Energy!) • Some of that energy is used to remove an electron from the atom. • The rest of the energy becomes the Kinetic Energy of the electron.
Your Photocell is not producing a current? What are two things you could do? • Increase the frequency of light • ROYGBIV • Change the metal of your cell to one with a smaller work function
What is the difference between ev and Joules? • An eV is one electron times one Volt. • They are both a unit of energy • To convert from eV to Joules we multiply by the charge of an electron 1.6 X 10-19 C • EX: 3 eV= ? J • 3(1.6 x 10-19c)=4.8 x 10-19 J
What Does this Graph mean? • The energy of emitted electrons versus the frequency of the incident light • Each metal has a different work function so it has a different cutoff frequency and y intercept. • All lines are parallel with a slope= h
What do each of the terms represent? • Work function • Cutoff frequency • Stopping potential
You have an experiment set up where the surface has a work function, F, and electrons are emitted with Kinetic energy, KE, causing a current, I. • If you increase the wavelength of light incident on the surface, what would change? • If you decrease the work function of the material what would change? • If you increase the intensity of the light, what would change? • If you increase the frequency of the light incident on the surface, what would change?
What would a graph of VsVs f look like? How would intensity Vs f and I graphs differ from KE Vs f and I?
