definition • The pursuit of pleasure as a matter of ethical principal, especially to the pleasure of the senses, all pleasure is intrinsically good • Hedonist- A person whose life is devoted to the pursuit of pleasure and self gratification • Pain is often as good as means, it is a signal that something is wrong and change is necessary. Some pleasures are a means to do something more painful, example taking drugs etc. • Involves enjoyment, satisfaction and happiness
Theories • Psychological Hedonism (Descriptive) • All people pursue pleasure. This is not the way people ought to be, this is the way they are, they naturally seek pleasure. • Example: Liberty, Peace, Money, Education are all desirable • Ethical Hedonism • Whether or not people pursue pleasure, they should or ought to do so. A right action is pleasure and a wrong action is a production of pain. • People will however get pleasure in different ways, for example winning a battle and winning a soccer game could be the same pleasure.
Theories • Motivational Hedonism • That only pleasure and pain motivate people to do or not to do things. They are only motivated by things that are going to increase pleasure and decrease pain. • Normative Hedonism • Claims that pleasure and all types of pleasure have worth and pain has no wroth. Friendships, actions and achievements, states of understanding, insight only have significant worth through the pleasures they cause and pain that’s are decreased.
Theories • Egoistic Hedonists • Believe that individual happiness is the most important, hence the name egoistic • Altruistic Hedonists • Believe that the happiness of all people is most important, the believe that personal sacrifice is necessary to bring happiness to others
