PDSA:Plan What? • Review pain & bowel management following THR & TKR Where? • In client’s home When? • During the first PT visit
PDSA: Do Data collected • Hospital discharged from • Type of surgery & date performed • Date of discharge • Date of first HCPT visit
PDSA: Do Data collected • Dr’s orders for analgesics on discharge • What analgesics client is actually taking • Pain scale at rest &on activity
PDSA: Do Data collected • Bowel management instructions provided to client on discharge from hospital • Client’s current bowel management • Last bowel movement
PDSA: Study Results • Analgesics prescribed by surgeons varied • Some clients told to take analgesics regularly; some told to take them as needed
PDSA: Study Results • Pain at rest: 0 to 7 out of 10 • Pain on activity: 0 to 8 out of 10
PDSA: Study Results • Only one client reported being given any information on bowel management • Last bowel movement varied from same day to two days prior • Bowel management varied
PDSA: Act What will we do next? • Try to improve pain & bowel management of clients by 7 days post-op
Next PDSA: Plan • Provide structured teaching on pain & bowel management • Provide written information on bowel management • Ask clients to keep pain & bowel diaries
