Qinghai Lake Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland saltwater lake in the northwestern Qinghai Province . Located at about 3,200 meters above sea level, the lake covers 4,300 square kilometers. It has abundant fish and other aquatic creatures, which in turn attracts large flocks of birds to perch in the islands of the lake. From ancient times to the present, whenever people mention Qinghai Lake they think of 'green lake', 'blue sea' or 'fairyland', because of the marvelous natural beauty reflected on it.
Qinghai Lake Because of the high altitude, the climate surrounding the lake is very cool. Even in the middle of the summer, the average temperature in the daytime is about 15 C (59 F), which is why it is often selected as a summer resort.
Kanas Lake Kanas Lake is located in the West China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The Chinese National Geography describes the lake as "God's palette" because of its rich variety of colors. When the water is clear, you can see a blue and green lake; underneath the thin clouds, Kanas Lake is pink; and when it is overcast, the lake is blue and grey.
Kanas Lake As China's deepest fresh water lake (184 meters at one spot), Kanas Lake was formed 200,000 years ago. The region is home to 798 species of plants and 117 varieties of birds. Living in the midst of this beauty are more than 1,400 people of the Tuva Minority, whose ancestors came from Siberia more than 1,000 years ago.
Namtso Lake In Nov. 14, 2005, Namtso Lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region was selected as one of the five most beautiful lakes in China by Chinese National Geography magazine. In Tibetan, Namtso means 'Heavenly Lake.' It is considered one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. Namtso is famous for its high altitude (4720 meters (about 3 miles)), vast area (1961 square kilometers (about 757 square miles) and beautiful scenery.
Namucuo Lake Being the second largest saltwater lake in China only after Qinghai Lake, Namtso Lake is the biggest lake throughout Tibet. Meanwhile, it is the highest altitude saltwater lake in the world. The water here is a storybook crystal-clear blue. Clear skies join the surface of the lake in the distance, creating an integrated, scenic vista.
Heavenly Lake (Tian Chi) A 2-million-year-old volcanic crater lake at the summit of Mt. Changbai, Heaven Pool is the largest volcanic crater lake in China. The volcanic Tianchi (Heavenly) Lake, 10 square km in area and 204 meters in average depth (373 meters at the deepest), marks the boundary of China and Korea on the top of Baitou Mountain, the main peak of Changbei Mountains.
West Lake Not a city like Hangzhou has the most graceful lake. West Lake is known for its elegant bridges and pavilions and its surrounding hills. It has inspired poets and artists for centuries. Su Shi, a poet from the Song Dynasty, compared the alluring lake to Xi Shi, China's Cleopatra. West Lake is at the center of Hangzhou City, which Marco Polo described as the most enchanting city in the world.
Dianchi Lake Dianchi Lake is about 300 square kilometers (74,132 acres). It is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth largest one in China. With picturesque scenery and its location on the Yungui Plateau, the lake has a reputation as 'A Pearl on the Plateau'.
Dianchi Lake The lake is crescent-shaped, about 39 kilometers (24 miles) in length and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in width at its widest. Its natural banks are formed by mountains on all four sides. More than twenty rivers nurture the lake which has a shoreline of 163.2 kilometers (101 miles). Four surrounding hills contribute to the picturesque landscape, making visitors intoxicated and linger around.
Lugu Lake Lugu Lake lies 200 kilometers (approximately 124 miles) from the center of Lijiang City, on the border between Ninglang County in Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province. The lake is like a beautiful pearl shining among the hills of the northwest plateau in Yunnan.
Lugu Lake On the lake there are five islands. They are different sizes and are like green boats floating on the water. Mystery and charm surround the lake, partly because it was once an unspoiled place and still retains much of its totally natural beauty, but mostly because the Mosuo people who live there form a matriarchal society.
Dongting Lake Dongting Lake, China’s second-largest freshwater lake, is located in northeastern Hunan Province. It is a large, shallow body of water surrounded by mountain chains. It is also known as “ Eight- hundred Li Dong Ting Lake”.
Dongting Lake The area around the lake has tremendous agricultural production ability with a long history of development. Since the plain is graced with fertile soil, proper temperature and plentiful rain, Dongting Lake is also called “ a land flowing with milk and honey”.
