BELLWORK In your notebooks write down everything you know about Communism
What is Communism? • a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state • In theory, everyone was equal
Famous Communists Mao Zedong- China Joseph Stalin- Soviet Union Fidel Castro- Cuba
What does Communism have to do with the United States? The Cold War 1947- 1991 McCarthyism Late 1940’s to late 1950’s
What is McCarthyism? Period of time known as the Second Red Scare Named after Senator Joseph McCarthy Increased fears of Communists in the U.S. Espionage by Soviets Soviet domination in Eastern Europe Chinese Communist Revolution Korean War
Senator Joseph McCarthy • Led the investigations in the House Un- American Activities Committee (HUAC) • Responsible for accusing 100s of Americans as Communists specifically those employed by the government, in the entertainment industry, or in education
Think about this….. Why were those employed by the government, in the entertainment industry or in education more susceptible to accusations of being a Communist or communist sympathizers than any other group?
How does this connect with The Crucible? 1. Arthur Miller was blacklisted in Hollywood for refusing to give names to the HUACand refusing to testify to the HUAC. What does HUAC remind you of? 2. The Crucible is a direct response to Miller’s views on the blacklisting of his left-winged friends. In the 1950s people were blacklisted for being accused of communism. In the 1690s people were ______ for being accused of _______.
The Connections Continue... 3. McCarthy once said: “ I have here in my hand a list of 205 people that were known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party, and who, nevertheless, are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department” (McCarthy, 2-9-50)…who does this sound like?
And Continue... 4. Arthur Miller refused to testify against his friends. What characters in The Crucible are refusing to testify in order to save their friends or family? 5. McCarthy led the accusations during the Second Red Scare. Who is leading the accusations in The Crucible?
Lives Lost Many people are being killed in The Crucible for refusing to testify to save their lives. The most famous execution during the McCarthy period was the deaths of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The were accused and convicted of stealing Atomic bomb secrets to the Soviets .
Allegory • A type of extended metaphor. • The characters, setting, events actually represent other people, places and events. • The Crucible was an allegory representing the McCarthy accusations in the 1940s and 1950s.
Make the Connection The Crucible is an allegory for the McCarthy era. What was Arthur Miller’s purpose in writing the play? What was his message? Can this happen again in the U.S? Has it already?
