The First Camp The first Nazi concentration camp was KZ Dachau which opened on March, 22 1933 First inmates: political prisoners, Social Democrats, Communists, trade unionists, habitual criminals, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, beggars, vagrants, hawkers.
The Last Camp • The last concentration camp liberated was Sttutthof near Danzig on May 9, 1945.
Deaths In the years that the Nazis held power of Europe, 20,000 camps were set up. The approximate number of Jews killed in the Holocaust is six million.
Numbers In six of the main camps, here are the number of deaths: Auschwitz: about 1,100,000 Treblinka: 700,000 to 800,000 Belzec: about 434,000 Sobibor: about 167,00-250,000 Chelmno: about 152,000 Majdanek: 78,000
Transportation • There were many ways leading to Auschwitz, the biggest camp.
Living Conditions Living conditions in death camps were extremely bad. Housing was cramped and damp, and roofs were leaky. The two types of barracks were brick and wooden. In each one would be at least 700 prisoners.
Graves The bodies of the deceased Jews were never taken proper care of. Many times Jews were forced to dig their own graves, others they were burned, and sometimes just simply buried with a pile of other Jews.
