On Earth Part One
“A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.” Revelation 12: 1 NIV
“Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads.” Revelation 12: 3 NIV
“His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.” Revelation 12: 4 NIV
“The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born.” “The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born.” Revelation 12: 4 NIV Revelation 12: 4 NIV
“She gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.” Revelation 12: 5 NIV
“The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.” Revelation 12: 6 NIV
Let’s identify what we are seeing here. A woman, in prophesy, represents a religious body; in this case she represents God’s religious movement beginning with the Israelite nation and morphing to the Christian community. The twelve stars represented the twelve tribes of Israel, becoming the twelve Apostles of Christ.
The red dragon represents Satan, who enticed one third of the angels to leave heaven and follow him, and through Herod, attempted to destroy Jesus when He was born. The male child represents Jesus, who, after His crucifixion returned to heaven leaving His followers exposed to Satan’s efforts during the dark ages of 1260 years.
Although persecuted and terrorized, God’s faithful followers found safety in the vastness of the wilderness in the mountains and far places of earth. God delivered and protected them, often by miraculous intervention, until the time came for a religious awakening.
We will see the fulfillment of the prophesy of Jesus ruling the ‘nations’ with an iron scepter, or rod, when He completes His coronation ceremony. Recognize that the term “nations’ simply means anyone or group who refuses to acknowledge God as supreme ruler and Savior / Redeemer. You could say the same thing by saying they are “non – Jews” because Revelation only recognizes two groups; Jews (those accepted by God) and non – Jews (those rejected by God).
We now will see events that transpired immediately upon Jesus returning to heaven after His crucifixion.
“And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.
The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him.” Revelation 12: 7 – 9 NIV
Don’t make the mistake of taking this picture lightly. Satan was mightily, forcefully, and powerfully ejected from heaven; he and his angels were thoroughly trounced and slammed to earth! Recognizing this fact makes understanding what comes later in the vision easier to understand.
Those events, however, open the door to God’s plans for the days ahead.
“Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Therefore rejoice you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you ! He is filled with fury because he knows his time is short.” Revelation 12: 10 – 12 NIV
Let’s look at this text a bit. We must recognize that it tells us that heaven rejoices because of several reasons; first note that Jesus has ‘Taken His power and begun to reign.” Sermons could be preached on this, but Jesus, having defeated Satan both on earth and in heaven has proven conclusively that He is the more powerful of the two; and He proved it to the angels. Next recognize that He has now legally assumed His authority that will carry him through to His final coronation. Finally recognize that earth faces those “woes” that will come upon them under the trumpets. Satan is now confined to the earth.
“When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. Revelation 12: 14 NIV
The woman was given the wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she could be taken care of for a time, times and half a time out of the serpent’s reach.” Revelation 12: 14 NIV
“Then from his mouth the dragon spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent.” Revelation 12: 15 NIV
“But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of its mouth.” Revelation 12: 16 NIV
Jesus’ offer of the true River of Life is here being counterfeited by Satan in an attempt to confuse and refocus God’s followers into looking to his false river of life, which leads them to death.
Satan’s attempt to replace God’s plan with his own counterfeit one failed; Israel, although failing often, maintained God’s original plan defeating Satan’s attempt to destroy heaven’s offer of life eternal.
The Israelites, in Jesus day, who accepted His offer of salvation, showed conclusively that God’s plan was alive and well.
When the Christian Church became God’s workforce on earth they became the target of Satan’s efforts. Even though those efforts began far back in history, they continue unabated today.
Let’s look at the Bible to see how Satan developed his program for combating God’s plan of salvation.
“The the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring – those who obey God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.” Revelation 12: 17 NIV
Look carefully at the manner Satan chose to make war on the offspring of the woman of God. “And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea.” 13: Revelation 1 NIV
When Satan stood on the shore of the sea he was not on vacation. Daniel explains his activities while standing there.
“Daniel said," In my vision at night I looked and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.” Daniel 7: 2 – 3 NIV
“The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle, I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a man, and the heart of a man was given to it.”Daniel 7: 4 NIV
“After that I looked and there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told,' Get up and eat your fill of flesh.’ ”Daniel 7:5 NIV
“After that I looked and there was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.Daniel 7: 6 NIV
“After that in my vision at night I looked and there before me was a fourth beast – terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.”Daniel 7: 7 NIV
Although there is much more to say about these four beasts we need to identify them before we proceed.
Historically, these beasts almost perfectly parallel the nations identified to Daniel in the vision found in the multi-metal image in chapter 2.
Head of gold … Babylon …,, Lion with 2 wings Chest of silver…Media –Persia...Bear with 3 ribs Thighs of bronze …Greece .. Leopard with 4 heads and wings Legs of iron …Pagan Rome … Non-descript beast
Why was it that this vision used different symbols for the nations ? Because there is more to recognize and understand in the vision of the beasts than in that of the multi-metal man. There is additional information for us to see.
These beasts in Daniel 7 are a result of Satan’s plan to attack the children of the chaste woman who represents God’s faithful followers down through the ages … God’s true religion.
These four beasts we see coming our of the sea (paganism) represent Satan’s counterfeit to God’s true religion … Satan’s false religion.
Therefore, although the very same nations are represented here, there is an additional level of understanding to be found as well. If this is true we should see some indication of it in the vision; We do!
Look again at those four beasts, looking for something normally missed. Lion with 2 wings and 2 legs like a man Bear with 3 ribs in his mouth Leopard with 4 heads and 4 wings Beast with 5 X 2 horns (10 horns) Do you see a progression of numbers here?
Also note that 3 of the 4 beasts have double numbers; two 2’s; one 3; two 4’s; and two 5’s.
Note also that Daniel saw the beasts coming out of the sea, which represents paganism, but the angel, when explaining the vision to Daniel indicated a different origin.
“I Daniel, was troubled in my spirit, and the vision that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. “So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things. The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.” Daniel 7: 15 – 17 NIV
Daniel saw the beasts arise from the sea (paganism) while the angel said they rose from the earth (Christianity) indicating that the vision has meaning under both headings. A dual application of the vision.
History reveals some very interesting parallels to this vision of beasts. In each of these nations represented here we find a stage of development in the pagan religion most crucial to the growth of Satan’s counterfeit of God’s plan.
During the reign of Babylon there arose, in the small country of Bactria, a new and unusual pagan religion. They worshipped a single god rather than a series of gods. That god was Ahura Mazda who was represented by the sun. The only other monotheistic religion was that which recognized the Creator, the God of Adam, Enoch, and Noah. This religion, led by Zoroaster or Zathustra, was called Zoroastrianism.
