Background • About Kalamazoo Christian Middle School (Grades 5-8) • 1st year using a 1:1 iPad program, iPads are currently in grades 5-8. • Next year our middle school will be in a brand new building! • This Building will provide new technology features such as smart board technology.
Background • Questions that should be addressed • How can we as a staff at KCMS learn to use our technology in the best educational way possible? • How can we as a staff at KCMS adapt our use of technology to our curriculum?
Objectives and Standards • What objectives and standards will be addressed in this professional development plan? METS: • “By the end of grade 8 each student will use digital resources (e.g., discussion groups, blogs, podcasts, videoconferences, Moodle, Blackboard) to collaborate with peers, experts, and other audiences” (METS, 6-8 CC.2).
Objectives and Standards • METS: • “using databases or spreadsheets to make predictions, develop strategies, and evaluate decisions to assist with solving a problem” (METS, 6-8 CT.1)
Objectives and Standards • METS: • “create media-rich presentations on the appropriate and ethical use of digital tools and resources” (METS, 6-8 DC.5).
How Will This Plan be Implemented? Teachers and staff members need to work together in grade level teams to adjust their curriculum more towards our iPads. Helping staff members understand how to create blogs and discussion boards to help students share ideas and thoughts outside of a classroom setting. Blogs and class/grade level websites to better communicate with families.
How Will This Plan be Implemented? Video tutorials and screencast to help staff members understand how to use programs like Edmodo or Moodle where classrooms can be more digital. Goals will also be established by staff members.
Exhibits • Beginners tutorial to the use of Edmodo for inexperienced staff members. • Technology development website for the KCMS staff. • This includes blogs where staff members can ask questions, share resources, and post their goals.
Assessment In the classroom teachers will be more familiar with e-learning platforms like Edmodo and Moodle and be able to assess students projects, quizzes, and assignments. Outside of the classroom teachers will be able to assess how other colleagues are doing in obtaining their goals.
Conclusion Move forward with the 1:1 program at KCMS and make the best use of the devices we have been blessed with. Help staff members to be more comfortable using iPads in the classroom and to use them effectively and educationally.
