Hello Group Leaders! Welcome to De Anza’s Tutorial & Academic Skills Center
You have been hired as a group tutor, a Skills supplemental instructor or a peer mentor at De Anza College. Congratulations!
You have joined a dynamic student-centered organization and a large, diverse team of faculty, staff and peer leaders who “support classroom instruction by helping students at all levels become better learners and gain the confidence and skills to achieve their greatest possible academic success.”
Our Goal Our program’s goal is to create welcoming, supportive and energetic communities that promote connection, collaboration, leadership and growth. We are especially committed to supporting the success of students from diverse backgrounds.
There are a few things you need to do to get off to a great start: • Complete your interview with your supervisor • Read your handbook on policies and procedures • Read your tutor training course syllabus • Attend an orientation • Mark your calendar with all meeting dates and assignment deadlines
Your Handbook To help you fully understand the policies and procedures of the Tutorial/Skills Center, you will be given a handbook at the beginning of the quarter. Please read this over carefully and ask your supervisor if you need clarification before you meet with your students.
Professional Meetings • Paid meetings are intended to help you get started, connect you with your peers, learn important procedures and give you resource information that will help you help your students. • Your supervisor will tell you the current meeting days and times for the quarter. • You may also find the current meeting schedule on the web: http://faculty.deanza.fhda.edu/alvesdelimadiana/
Your Training is Essential! Your students expect and deserve leaders who demonstrate a high degree of professionalism as well as sound content knowledge and excellent communication skills.
The Class • You are required to enroll and participate in a one-unit course called Learning Assistance 98, section 56 (LRNA 98 “G” -- tutor training for group leaders). • The course meets six times, starting week 3 of the quarter. • Your supervisor will give you the current day, time and location of this course. • The course web site is: http://faculty.deanza.edu/Alvesdelimadiana/stories/storyReader$1358
What You Learn This course will not only teach you group leadership, communication and team-building skills that will help you during your first and subsequent quarters tutoring or mentoring, but it will help you develop skills for life.
Your Course Syllabus Your syllabus for LRNA98 ”G” will give you all the requirements of this tutor training course. As a peer leader in training, you will be expected to: • Fully participate in classroom activities, • Complete and submit quality assignments in a timely manner, • Complete make-up assignments for missed classes • And…
Communicate regularly with your “network”! • Your tutor training course instructors • Your content course instructor, • Your supervisor, and • Your senior tutor!
Your Grade The grade you earn in LRNA98-56 will be Pass/No Pass. However, internal grades will be posted as letter grades. Points will be awarded for quality and timeliness of course assignments, communication and professionalism.
Make-up Assignments Of course, we want you to attend the Tutor Training class regularly. But if you do miss a class, you can do a make-up assignment. See the LRNA98 “G” web page for details: http://faculty.deanza.edu/alvesdelimadiana/stories/storyReader$1358.
Certificate of Completion New tutors who pass the tutor training course are eligible for rehire at the discretion of the supervisor. All tutors who pass the course will receive a Tutor Training Certificate of Completion at the end of the quarter.
We hope this presentation has helped clarify your job and training responsibilities as you begin your first quarter as a De Anza College group leader.
