Aim To give students an understanding of effective communications
Learning Outcomes At the end of this session students will be able to : • Define the term ‘one-way’ and ‘two-way’ communication • Identify barriers towards effective communication • State the benefits of an effective brief • Define the acronym SMEAC
Types of communication systems Broadly divided into two categories; One-way communication (closed system) Two-way communication (open system).
Barriers to communication • Timings • Overload • Distortion • Perceptions • Bias.
Briefing Clear, concise, and easy to understand, an effective brief will; • Enhance communication • Promote discipline • Allow for complete understanding of role • Allow for individual task ID and allocation • Provides opportunity to seek confirmation.
Elements of a brief S – Situation M – Mission E – Execution A - Any questions C - Check understanding.
Listening • Search for the central idea • Control your emotions • Evaluate the message • Non-verbal behaviour • Verbal behaviour.
Helpful hints • Plan • Use examples • Keep to the subject • Make a note of questions.
