News for next week School Photographs – Monday and Tuesday Orion’s Birthday 2014 – Friday
Why read? • Develops language • Develops imagination • Develops concentration • Opens up new worlds • Solving problems • Understanding others • Bonding • Relaxation • A life skill
Pre- reading skills • Parts of the book • Where are the words? • Talk about the story? • What do you like? • What don’t you like? • Fill in the words
Skills of inference A hard skill to learn but very important. It is being an active reader – using your existing knowledge to draw conclusions and make connections Taking things you know about and applying them to other situations. We infer without thinking when we watch TV/movies – look at body language/gestures etc
Make it competitive/Offer reward? Make it fun! National competition coming soon
Read for my school competition coming next week… Fantastic reading challenge
Top tips for parents • Let your child repeat after you • Repeat books over and over • Read to your child • Tell your child they have tried hard, give them a tip to improve if you can • Do not try to read with your child when they are hungry/tired/upset • Give your child time • Don’t get frustrated with them • Make reading a routine part of the day
