A Light for the World Slide Show Series is dedicated to
Pope John Paul II who was a light in our dark world
Light Dawns in the Darkness Part Two
Two years later they again went to the Marches to fetch the princess, only to find that she would not return with them
In Scandanavia, however, they learned that to the east there were vast pagan territories
waiting for the Gospel
Consequently, on their return journey they went first to Rome
They begged Pope Innocent III to let them go on the missions together but he refused, saying the bishop was needed back home.
Diego, however, decided to return by way of the famous abbey
at Citeaux in France
Diego received the Cistercian habit there
On the way back to Osma at the city of Montpellier in June 1206,
Diego and Dominic met the Abbot of Citeaux and two of his monks
The Cistercians had been sent by Innocent
to preach against Albigensianism
These three complained to Diego that they had no success in their preaching,
Taking a look at the situation we see that theViscounty of Beziers-Carcassone was the strong center of the heresy
Towns In 1198 the town of Lodève had robbed and maltreated its bishop
In 1205 the town of Béziers had assassinated the bishop
The SIZE
and STRENGTH
of the Castle at Carcassone
can give some idea as to how powerful
Count Raymond V of Toulouse
sought to arrest the spread of the heresy
but acknowledged “… my strength is not sufficient to overcome so widespread and so difficult a problem, because…”
“… the most important nobles of my land are ravaged by this disease, drawing away after them a very great multitude of men who apostatise from the faith …”
His successor was Count Raymond VI who would not disturb any of his subjects for reasons of heresy
so as not to weaken his power
The vagueness of the link between vassal and lord
forced them to recruit mercenaries.
The mercenaries destroyed everything and laid waste everything.
They were thought to be linked with the heretics,
since they shared their hatred of the clergy.
There were more than 50 co-lords at Fanjeaux
Violence was deeply rooted everywhere
People were very much attracted to the Catharists
The “Perfect” were poor and austere and lived on alms from the people.
The wealthy abbeys were a sharp contrast
Diego told the Cistercians that they must not abandon their mission
but must counter the Catholic clergy's bad example,
by preaching as the Apostles had done, barefoot and begging.
The Cistercians replied: If some person of real moral authority
was willing first to show the example by preaching in this way,
they would very willingly follow him.
Dominic Diego offered himself. He sent horses and baggage back to Osma and dismissed his clergy. He kept with him a single companion
Entering the diocese of Béziers the preachers were completely in the midst of heretical territory
At Servian they engaged in pubilc debate with Thierry and others under the presidency of the local lord.
