The DREAM Act • The goal: • 3 million students graduate from high school every year • The American Dream • 65,000 students don’t get the opportunity to succeed • “Illegal Alien” status • Conditional Path to Citizenship
The DREAM Act • Requirements • Must have entered the country before age 16 • 6 year path • College degree • Military service for 2 years • “Good moral character” • Student’s who HAVEN’T graduated • 12 years or older • Enrolled full time in primary or secondary school
The DREAM Act • Disqualification • Don’t meet initial requirements • Fail to complete 2 years of college OR 2 years of military service • Dishonorable discharge from the military • Left the country for 365 days during the 6 year period
The DREAM Act • Hasn’t passed in Congress yet, so students can not apply • 209 legislators support the bill • 117 legislators oppose the bill • 211 undecided • Need a majority in both the House and Senate
