  3. The Crusades The purpose was to capture the Holy Land Pope Urban II called the people of Europe to war In the span of 200 years, the Church launched 8 military expeditions (crusades)

  4. The Crusades European Christians known as pilgrims, had been traveling to Jerusalem since A.D. 200. Pilgrims included Nobles & peasants

  6. Causes of the Crusade Seljuk Turks took control of the Holy Land in the 1000s Seljuk Turks were as Muslim group that attacked Christian pilgrims. They then closed the routes to Jerusalem Turks also conquering the Byzantine Empire

  7. Causes of the Crusades: Why go to War? Pope wanted Holy Land under Christian control Pope thought Crusades could unite Europeans. Pope hoped to gain power & prestige (status) for himself Other Europeans wanted control of key trade routes

  8. The People’s Crusade: Peter the Hermit and the People’s Crusade A small group of common people led by a man named Peter, arrived in Constantinople in 1096. Group were asked by the Byzantine emperor to wait for knights, but group disobeyed the order and were easily defeated by the Turks

  9. The Crusades (Eight in total) European (Christian) armies fought against the Turks for control over Jerusalem. The crusaders captured Jerusalem and maintain control until Muslim leader, Saladin, retook control in 1187. Crusaders never regained control, but Saladin agreed to allow Christian pilgrims into Jerusalem

  10. Results (Impact) of Crusades Revived trade which led to the growth of towns & cities Encouraged the use of money. New ideas & technology: Arab advances in math & medicine Learned how to make better ships & maps

  11. Activity Suppose that there were European newspapers that published editorials at the time of the Crusades. Write an editorial in support or against of the Crusades. Remember to first state your position and then use reason and facts to convince readers that your opinion is the right one. This should be at least 5-6 sentences. Use your 4 vocabulary terms (Crusades, pilgrims, Holy Land, Jerusalem. You should include at least 4-5 facts. Use your notes and you may also use pgs 133-137 in your textbook.
