INTRODUCTION • RECEIVING COMPLAINTS OF NON-READABLE BROCHURES? • YOU MAY BE HAVING PROBLEMS OF THE FOLLOWING: 1. WORDS BEING TOO SMALL. 2. TOO MANY ITALICS. 3. UNFAMILIAR FONTS FOR THE GENERAL AUDIENCE. • MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SELECT THE RIGHT FONT IN WRITING A DOCUMENT OR A BROCHURE FOR THEIR BUSINESS.
FONTS & BUSINESS • FONTS SELECTION IS A VERY IMPORTANT MECHANISM IN HELPING A BUSINESS GROW. • A NON-READABLE BROCHURE OR AN AD MAY MEAN A DECLINE IN BUSINESS. • NEED A BROCHURE TO GRAB THE ATTENTION OF THE PEOPLE, YET MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE AUDIENCE TO READ AND NOT HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL. • SIMPLE EQUATION: • NON-READABLE FONTS = CUSTOMER’S IRRITATION= FAILED BUSINESS
TYPES OF FONTS • THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF FONTS TO CHOOSE FROM. • MAIN ONES USED BY PEOPLE ARE: 1. Times new Roman. 2. Courier. 3. New Century Schoolbook. 4.Arial. • COURIER IS THE NUMBER ONE FONT USED BY MOST OLD-FASHIONED TYPE WRITERS.
DO’S & DON’T FONT USAGE • DO : STAY WITH THE SIMPLE FONT. DO NOT TRY TO BE FLASHY. • DO : USE A FONT SIZE BIG ENOUGH TO BE EASILY READ BUT NOT TOO BIG. 12-POINT FONT IS USUALLY THE MOST ACCEPTABLE. FONT SIZES GO FROM 1 – 100. • DO : USE SUB-HEADINGS WITH BIGGER FONT THAN THE REGULAR TEXT. USE BOLD IF NEED TO GRAB THE READER’S ATTENTION. • DO : DESIGN EACH LINE’S LENGTH EQUALLY. DO NOT RUN MARGINS. • DO : LEAVE PLENTY OF FREE SPACE IN THE DOCUMENT TO SHOW NEATNESS AND CLARITY. • DO : SHOW YOUR FINISHED DOCUMENT TO OTHERS SO THEY CAN PROOF READ.
DO’S & DON’TFONT USAGE II • DON’T : USE ITALICS ALL THROUGH A DOCUMENT. • DON’T : PLACE LINES TOO CLOSELY OR TOO FAR APART. THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO BE READ. • DON’T : USE WHITE FONT COLOR WITH DARK BACKGROUND. RESEARCHERS HAVE SHOWN THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO READ. • DON’T : USE ASTERISKS AT THE START OF EACH MAJOR POINT. RATHER, USE BULLETS OR NUMBERS TO IDENTIFY THEM. • DON’T : USE FLASHY FONTS. USE SIMPLE FONTS WITH SUFFICIENT FONT SIZE MADE EASY FOR PEOPLE TO READ.
