7. What We Do and Don’t DO • WE DON’T force students to write about issues that don’t interest them • WE DO encourage students to invent topics and pathways into assignments that will engage them

8. What We DO and Don’t DO • WE DON’T teach writing solely for students to succeed in school • WE DO instruct students to write with rhetorical intent, so they learn how to write for many audiences and situations

9. WHAT WE DO and don’t do • WE DON’T accept the view that some students are “just not good at writing” • WE DO expect all students to succeed in writing significant essays about the community

10. The University of Kentucky Writing Program invites students to engage the world around them critically and creatively, and to discover that through writing, they can make things happen.
