  1. SPECTRAP - GSI progress report and status overview

  2. Initial problems • View ports were not in line • No vacuum could be established • We had no idea how the whole system looked inside • The trap had to be changed anyhow => The best option was to disassemble the whole system piece by piece Zoran Anđelković

  3. Stage I – dismantling ions Mounting “can” Outer (70K) shield Liquid nitrogen dewar trap Inner (4K) shield SC magnet coils 4K elec. Liquid helium dewar Zoran Anđelković

  4. Removing the outer shield Supported by a small crane Positioning spokes Zoran Anđelković

  5. Removing the LN dewar Zoran Anđelković

  6. Broken bellows on the LN dewar Zoran Anđelković

  7. LN dewar and inner shield overview Zoran Anđelković

  8. Removing the inner shield Some broken electronics parts Broken support disc of the inner shield + other smaller damages Zoran Anđelković

  9. The “old” trap & 4K electronics amplifier and (broken) coil a hyperbolic trap with two “pre-traps” Zoran Anđelković

  10. Removing the LHe dewar Zoran Anđelković

  11. Intermezzo I – the HITRAP platform future beam line ... and the SPECTRAP setup on it Zoran Anđelković

  12. Stage II – repaired? No, still vacuum problems ~ 6·10-2 mbar  Zoran Anđelković

  13. Leak (hole) search • pumping test of the dewars • found a bad weld on the LN dewar • no further (big) leaks detected Zoran Anđelković

  14. Intermezzo II – the “new” trap Trap design modified for purposes of SPECTRAP Zoran Anđelković

  15. Further modifications new electronics development with help of Stahl electronics additional mirror & lens pair Zoran Anđelković

  16. Next steps • Put the system (again) back together and check the vacuum • Add the electronics and optics to the trap • If the vacuum should be OK – cool down (LN + LHe) and energize the SC magnet • Think of installing a Faraday cup under the trap • Shoot some (any) ions through • Make simulations of ions inside the trap • Be optimistic! Zoran Anđelković
