Exercise NorthStar V Singapore’s first surprise large-scale civil emergency drill with 2000 participants from 22 government agencies taking part and involving the disruption of public train services.
Why is there a need? The bombings in London and Bali in 2005 serve as reminders.
Why is there a need? The need for Singapore to stay on guard and take the countermeasures seriously to protect ourselves.
Why is there a need? We must be: • well-prepared to deal with any crisis • be strong & stand united
Why is there a need? This is also a test to see how “ready” we are to deal with such crisis.
It happened… • On 8 January 2006 Sunday • At 5 exercise locations namely: • Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station • Toa Payoh MRT Station • Raffles Place MRT Station • Marina Bay MRT Station • Toa Payoh Bus Interchange • About 3 hours from 6.25 am to 9.30 am
Reactions from public Very suay (unlucky), they said there would be an explosion on the train.
They came, they queued, some grumbled I’m already late for work and have been waiting for more than 20 min. When on earth is the shuttle bus coming??
I think it's good, because in real life, an emergency can happen anytime
To get Singapore ready is very important because right now terrorists are quite rampant in other countries. So it's better to have such a drill to get Singapore ready in times of crisis.
The early bird gets the “blast” I want my kids to know how real the terror threat can be and how they should respond if they get caught in such a situation. I can’t be with them all the time.
Her kids’ response… Like that only? Waste my time to wake up so early.
Class Discussion • Are we ready if terrorists attack us? • What other ways can they terrorise us? • How should you react if it happens?
