Lee Thomas J. Jackson was the most revered of all Confederate commanders • Served in the artillery in the Mexican War, earning two brevets.
What were the main Battles of the Civil War? Fort Sumter April 12th-14th, 1861 Fort Sumter was the first battle to be fought in the Civil War. It caused the Civil War which lasted for five years and killed or wounded 1.1 million soldiers. The battle happened April 12th, 1861 in Charleston South Carolina. The target was Fort Sumter. In the fort were Union Soldiers trying to defend Fort Sumter for as long as they could with very little food. The ones attacking Fort Sumter was the Confederacy. Since South Carolina was now part of the Confederates and the believed that they were now a separate country. They thought the U.S government had no right to be on confederate land. When Lincoln was told he refused to move the troops. Now the south was trying to take the fort. The battle only lasted a couple of day there were no causalities. It was a battle because of what it represented. In this battle the south won.
What were the main Battles of the Civil War? Battle of Gettysburg July 1st-3rd ,1863 The battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest and most remembered battle during the Civil War. It lasted three days July st - July 3rd 1863 and had 51,000 causalities (US 23,000 CS 28,000). Principal Commanders included Maj. Gen. George G. Meade (US) Gen. Robert E. Lee (CS)
1stBattle of Bull RunJuly 21st, 1861 This battle was the first major battle in the Civil War. It took place in Virginia near the Manassas. The armies in this battle were not very large. The causalities were around 5,000. Confederates suffered about 2,000. Union suffered about 3,000.
2ndBattle of Fort FisherJanuary 13-15, 1865 Fort Fisher protected the entrance to the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The river was the only navigable link to Wilmington. Once the fort was captured, it would completely isolate the Confederate States of America from trading partners willing to run the naval blockade.
Battle of Appomattox Court HouseApril 9th, 1865 The Battle took place at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9th, 1865. John Brown Gordon’s corps and Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry formed line of battle outside the court house. This battle is the surrender of the confederates to the union this was the final battle of the Civil War. Around 500 were dead.
What were the main weapons and vehicles used during the Civil War? • There were very many different types of guns but most guns fell into two categories. Those were the smoothbore or the rifled cannon. They were further designated by the weight of their projectile (12 pounds, 24 pounds, 32 pounds etc.). They were also designated by the caliber or size of their bore diameter (3 inch, 8 inch, 10 inch). Some were designated by the method of loading (breech or muzzle).
What were the main weapons and vehicles used during the Civil War cnt. • Also designated by inventor or factory such as Dahlgren, Napoleon, Rodman, Parrot, Whitworth. A further distinction would be by there trajectories. Most cannons were made of steel bronze or iron depending on material availability .A favorite to both sides was the Napoleon Smoothbore, Muzzle loading, 12 pound “gun howitzer” developed under the auspices of Louis Napoleon. First appeared in 1857. Was very light and portable.
What were the main weapons and vehicles used during the Civil War cnt. The gun was used as both offensive and defensive weapon by both armies. Was made of bronze. Napoleons were cast from iron when south ran out of other metals. The maximum effective range was 1,700 yards. Was more effective though in 250 yards or less. This weapon caused more causalities then any other artillery piece combined. The most used Rifled gun was the three inch Ordnance and 10 pdr Parrot Rifle. Both were more accurate with longer ranges which is about 2,300 yards. During some battles longer range was unnecessary.
What were the main weapons and vehicles used during the Civil War cnt. • However rifled cannons were effective in knocking down fortifications. Almost all Civil War cannons were muzzle loading. Muskets were considered small arm smoothbore and long barreled. Transportation included the improved train system.
How did the Civil War affect Americas future I think that if the war did not happen that slavery might have gone on longer. I also think that If the north had just let those states secced then I might not be apart of the Untied Sates of America. Also if slavery wasn’t abolished I wonder if woman now would be able to work and vote.
How does the Civil War end? • The Civil War ended with the Confederates surrendering. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox court in Virginia. Not even a week later President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilks Booth.
