  2. What is soil? • Soil is a mixture of weathered rock, minerals, organic matter (humus), air and water. • Soil texture: • Gravel • Sand • Silt • Clay

  3. LOAM - A balance of sand, silt, clay and humus (the good stuff) = FERTILE soil Gravel vs. Clay? Which will allow water travel through it the fastest? GRAVEL

Soil Horizons • ACROSS from Notes 2: • Neatly sketched diagram ON TOP of flaps (NO WORDS) • At least 4 colors used • Labeled horizons UNDER FLAPS • Neatly written definitions also UNDER FLAPS • Soil horizon – a layer of soil that differs in color and texture from the layers surrounding it. • Horizon ATopsoil – crumbly, dark brown, mostly humus • Horizon BSubsoil – mostly clay, very little humus • Horizon C – partially weathered rock chunks from bedrock • Bedrock – the solid layer of rock beneath the soil horizons
