Background facts & figures Driving has the potential to cause death & serious injury: Road crashes are the biggest cause of work related accidents In last 3 years – 15,753 crashes occurred & every 1 in 4 were work related 800-1000 people are killed annually in work related road traffic accidents
Driving Policy & CoP Apply to: • Anyone driving for work purposes – even occasionally (including students) • College, leased & hired vehicles • Private vehicles used for work purposes Does not apply to commuting to & from usualworkplace
Driving Policy & CoP Key Points to note: There are specific responsibilities forHoDs, line managers, supervisors, fleet managers & drivers Reduce the level of driving – consider alternatives: • Use public transport • Use conference call provision • Use couriers for transport – esp. dangerous goods Compliance with legal & insurance requirements Where driving forms part of normal duties – training, health screen & sight checks are required Departmental vehicles need a fleet manager
Driving Policy Whenever driving for work purposes, take note of: Driver fatigue - 300 killed per year due to fatigue. Consider working time as well as driving time Using mobile phones is illegal & dangerous – reaction time is 30% worse even with hands-free Suitable car insurance – if used for work, private cars will need business insurance (Note: insurers may deem “work” as dropping off a file on the way home after work in your usual workplace) Carriage of hazardous materials – use specialist couriers whenever possible.
