After the Stamp Act Congress, Parliament met to discuss the issue of colonial protest. Benjamin Franklin appeared in front of Parliament and urged Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. He warned of a possible revolution in the colonies if the Stamp Act was enforced.

  1. After the Stamp Act Congress, Parliament met to discuss the issue of colonial protest. Benjamin Franklin appeared in front of Parliament and urged Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act. He warned of a possible revolution in the colonies if the Stamp Act was enforced.

  3. Townshend Acts Series of 1767 laws named for Charles Townshend, British Chancellor of the Exchequer (Treasurer). These laws placed new taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. Colonial reaction to these taxes was the same as to the Sugar Act and Stamp Act, and Britain eventually repealed all the taxes except the one on tea.

  5. The Intolerable Acts • The Boston Port Bill passed in March of 1774. It closed the Port of Boston until the colonists paid for the tea they destroyed. • To enforce the law, Parliament ordered the British navy to blockade Boston Harbor. Warships were used to prevent other ships from entering or leaving. • The Massachusetts Government Act stopped the Massachusetts legislature from making laws and banned town meetings that were not authorized by the royal governor. • A new Quartering Act ordered that colonists in Boston had to quarter British soldiers.
