NC has the fastest growing Latino population in the US • By 2040, 22% of US will be Latino • 34 % of NC Latinos speak English poorly while 50% speak English74% less than very well • 74% of NC Latinos age 16+ are in the labor force while 69% are employed (transportation, construction, farming) NC Latino Health Task Force, 2003
Goals for all students • Graduate prepared for work or post-secondary education • Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and application of concepts • Become globally prepared • Become responsible decision makers

Why Health Education? • 53 million children are enrolled in 120,000 schools everyday (ASCD,1998) • Feeling safe at school, eating breakfast, avoiding alcohol/drugs, staying physically active, and sleep are all related to improved academic performance ( CHKS, 2002) • 60%-80% of chronic disease is stress-related (CDC, 2002) • 75% of all deaths between ages 10-25 are injuries (CDC,2002) • 67% of all deaths over age 25 are CVD or cancer (CDC, 2002) • Resilient youth are (Hawkins/Catalano, 1999) • 19% less likely to commit violent acts • 38% less likely to binge drink • 13% likely to engage in sexual intercourse • 35% less likely to become pregnant
