(CDC) • The Center for Disease Control (CDC) concludes that sports concussions have reached "epidemic levels.” • Congress estimates over 40% of high schoolathletes return to school athletics before fullyrecovering from concussions, significantly increasing susceptibility of greater injury or death. • Sports-related emergency department visits between2001-2009 of youths aged 5 to 18 increased 62% to2.6 million annually. 6.5% (173,285) involved atraumatic brain injury, including concussion. (CDC) • For young people ages 15 to 24, sports are the 2ndleading cause of traumatic brain injury behind motorvehicle crashes.
