  2. Reference Services • The main task of reference librarian is to help the users to overcome barriers to obtain information and accomplish their goals

  3. Barriers to information services • Barriers to users: • Time limitations • Lack of knowledge of what sources exist or how to find and use them • The sheer size and complexity of the world of information

  4. Information services take a variety of forms: • Direct personal assistance • Directories • Signs • Readers advisory services • Dissemination of information in anticipation of user needs • Access to electronic information

  5. Forms of reference services Depending on the user needs, the librarian takes different approaches in providing assistance: • Information • Helping user find it • Guidance - How to find and use sources to meet an educational, recreational or developmental goals • Instruction -Use of libraries and information sources

  6. Reference Services: Information • Ready reference questions • Questions that can be answered quickly by consulting one or two reference tools • Request factual information • Bibliographic verification • Provide facts about publications -librarian will search bibliographic tools – print or electronic – to verify the users on the information about a document

  7. Interlibrary loan and document delivery • A form of cooperative network among libraries • Information and referral services • Identify community resources and agencies that can provide the users with the needed services • Fee-based services and information brokering

  8. Reference Services: Guidance • Readers Advisory services • Term-paper counseling • Current Awareness Services • Selective Dissemination of Information

  9. Reference Services: Instruction • One-to-one instruction • Group instruction

  10. Reader Services • This section provides services to library users including registration of clients, reader education, meeting users’ request for specific information and assistance and the management of the use and loan of library material and equipment

  11. Among others, the services provided by this section are: • Loans • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) • Reader Education • Publicity and Public Relations • Reader Assistance • Services to Distinct user Groups

  12. Reader Services • User registration • Loan Policy • Document delivery

  13. Virtual Reference • Is considered as the type of reference that is provided through cyberspace, or more specifically, over the internet. • Format of virtual reference: • E-mail • Chat • Real-time live web conference • AskA Service (Ask-an-Expert on-line services)

  14. Internet • Local databases • External databases
