Doug Grant Acquitted After four months of trial witness testimony full of twists and Turns, including stories of deceit, deception, greed and lust, last Wednesday an Arizona jury convicted Doug Grant, 37, guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the July 2020 death of his wife Faylene Grant. The jury concluded that Doug Grant had been aware of the danger he was putting his family in by not taking steps to protect them during a marriage that ended in divorce but chose to ignore the signs and eventually take his own life. As the guilty verdict was read, Doug Grant's father, David Grant, sobbed into his hands and then broke down in tears as he talked of the pain and suffering his son had caused him. Doug Grant lawyer, Bob Burd, has requested a retrial based on the testimony of another woman, Lora Plumb, who testified that Doug Grant had abused her. But according to the judge, who refused the request, she was not qualified to testify because she did not have direct personal knowledge of the abuse. She was the one that provided the details to the prosecutor's case. In addition, even though her evidence may not have been 100 percent accurate, there was no physical proof to prove the abuse and there was no other evidence to prove that she had ever spoken to Doug Grant or witnessed his abuse.
Doug Grant was also denied a new trial due to ineffective counsel. During closing arguments, defense attorney Bob Burd had called the prosecution's witnesses with little knowledge of the law, failed to call the expert witnesses that he had asked for and made questionable claims. The jury, which had started out with a unanimous guilty verdict, returned to the courtroom at the end of the proceedings and voted to acquit Grant. Doug Grant's supporters say that he was railroaded by the prosecution and were left with no choice but to accept the guilty verdict. "We believe that this case is unfair and Doug deserves the right to a retrial because the jury was not able to make a rational decision," said his mother, Linda Grant. "The verdict is what we are stuck with," said Doug Grant's father, David Grant. "I am sure that justice was served today. Although the sentence handed down by the court may be less than what Doug deserves, the sentence should serve as a wakeup call to those in the legal system who ignore domestic violence and neglect the warning signs. According to experts, this case will serve as a model for other victims and encourage other victims to come forward and seek help from law enforcement.
