  2. Anton van Leeuwenhoek • Amateur scientist (drape maker by trade) • 1676 sent letters to the Royal Society in London • Reported living animals in water (animalcules) • Constructed first simple microscope

  3. Microscopes • Many types • Must have a lens and a light source • An instrument that produces larger than life images, pictures, or video.

  4. Simple Microscope • Uses only one lens and a natural light source. • Lens- a curved piece of glass, bends light as it pass through. Water will do the same.

  5. Compound Light Microscope • Used in our class • Uses more than one lens • Electric light source • Uses light to make objects appear larger.

  6. Electron Microscope • Very powerful • Uses beams of electrons • Magnifies by a million times • Found in hospitals and universities.

  7. Robert Hooke • Worked with microscopes about 100 years later • Designed first compound microscope that was adjustable for focus.
