  1. Graphing Non-linear Inequalities

  2. What does non-linear mean? • Since linear means line, a non-linear refers to an equation that represents a curve, not a line. Non-linear Linear

  3. What does inequality mean? • When an equation is an inequality, it does not equal just one value. • There are an infinite number of solutions to an inequality. • For example if y ≥ 3 than y can equal any number that is 3 or greater. Less than < Greater than > Less than or equal to ≤ Greater than or equal to ≥ Does not equal ≠ 3

  4. Graphing non-linear inequalities • Equation y > x² • Make a table • Insert x value into the equation and record y value. Example • y > (-4) ² y > 16

  5. Plot points

  6. Decide whether the line of the curve is going to be solid or dotted • Equation y > x² • > and < mean that the curve is going to be dotted • ≥ and ≤ mean that the curve is going to be solid

  7. Decide whether you are going to shade above or below the curve. • Equation y > x² • y is greater than x² • This means that you are going to shade above the curve. • This means that x equals any of the points that are in the shaded region.

  8. PRACTICE! PRACTICE!PRACTICE! y ≤ x³

  9. y > √x
