Preterit Tense. The Rules. Preterit is used for completed actions. Example 1: Yo compr é los libros ayer. Example 2: Ellos me dijeron anoche. Preterit is used to tell the beginning or end of an action. Example 1: El examen empez ó a las ocho. Example 2: Las fiestas terminaron a la una.
