University of Bradford Recycling is Coming!!
Recycling is Good for Reputation! • Many UK Universities including Leeds collect up to 50% of waste for recycling • UoB collects ~20% of waste for recycling (paper) • Now league tables coming out for Environmental Performance • People and Planet Green League - Bradford 16th, Leeds Met 1st
Recycling is Good for the Environment! • Our landfill sites are rapidly filling up • Reduce pollution and conserving natural resources. • Save energy on raw materials • Reduce greenhouse gases • Stimulate the development of greener technologies.
Recycling Saves Money! • Current Waste Spend ~ £150,000 / annum • Rising fast • Landfill tax rising at £8 / tonne / annum • Recycling will save £20,000 - £30,000 per annum after 2-3 year payback
2007 Recycling Pilot @ City Centre Campus • 3 Corridors – D and F Floor Richmond and Horton • VC and all senior staff involved • Average recycling rates achieved >60% • Staff showed a very high level of support for the scheme
The Recycling Roll Out • Starting at School of Management • City Centre Campus rollout to start early 2008 • By Sept 2008 the scheme will be fully up and running throughout UoB
What will we be able to recycle? • Paper and Card • Cans and Metals • Plastics • Glass To sit alongside specialist collections for Electrical Waste, Hazardous Waste (e.g. fluorescent tubes), confidential paper, green waste and others
Isn’t it better to Minimise and Re-use? • Ecoversity to start looking into other waste reduction options • Re-use options: Furniture, clothes, U boutique, swap shop, paper etc • Minimisation options: Bags, paper, cups, packaging etc
How will I recycle? • Banks of bins in communal areas around the site • Where required to have combination of general waste, paper, card, cans, plastics and glass • Recycling bins will go into place very soon
What if I’m not sure what to do? • Clear signage on each bin – national standard signs • Will set up Recycling Website • FAQ’s and info online • Video for students • Case Studies on how different people work within the system • Competitions and league tables for recycling
So will this new system be convenient? • Later in 2008 people will be required to take their waste to the banks of bins • Similar to curb side recycling at home • Can do it when going for a cup of tea or to the toilet, meetings, leaving etc • Desk bins will stay in place for a limited period • Much more hygienic – food waste bins to be emptied daily
THANKYOU • Any questions?
