Basic Assumptions About People • People have a fundamental need to do well • People want control at work • People do not want to be held accountable for things they cannot control • People want feedback, but do not like to be “evaluated” • People want to be valued
Characteristics of Motivation • Motivation is individualistic - every person will be motivated in a unique kind of way • Motivation is a process – a series of interconnected steps • Motivation can be complex, but it is logical • Motivation is manageable • Motivation is not exploiting others
Motivation has 3 components • Direction – what task I choose to work on • Effort – how hard I work on the task • Persistence – how long I will work on the task
