  1. Common Interfaces to Heterogeneous Resources

  2. glideinWMS • Version 2.x supports grid submission only • Version 3.x introduces expanded support for other resources • Standard grid submission support unchanged • Support possible for Condor-C submissions • Support Clouds that provide EC2 Query API interface • OpenStack, Eucalyptus, Nimbus, EC2, OpenNebula, etc. • Excluded: Microsoft Azure • Note: Cloud implementations differ significantly • Example: EC2 user-data is allowed to be 64KB, Nimbus by default is limited to 4KB • EC2 provides meta-data (including user-data) over http, OpenNebula uses a proprietary method

  3. glideinWMS - Cloud • Requires an image that has been contextualized to work with glideinWMS • https://github.com/holzman/gwms-cloud-vms • Provides bootstrap service that acts upon the user-data • Provides templates to automate VM image generation using BoxGrinder • glideinWMS controls the user-data • Bootstrap service must be able to access user-data • Bootstrap service will setup and launch the pilot on the VM • Bootstrap service contains several safeguards to prevent “zombie” VMs • CERN-VM poses more problems than solutions

  4. CMS HLT Cluster • ~13,000 cores soon to be available • Installing OpenStack on the cluster • glideinWMS v3 to manage CMS workflows • Current status: • glideinWMS set up, final configuration to be determined • Factory can request VMs • OpenStack issues preventing complete workflow • Image issues • Configuration issues

  5. glideinWMS v3 • FNAL to run glideinWMS v3 in production to validate grid submission • Can aggregate resources from both the grid and the cloud from same factory • Have performed tests where user jobs have been submitted to and run on OSG resources, XSEDE resources, and Amazon EC2 resources. • Same set of jobs, different resources running simultaneously
