WRA 150: Evolution of American thought TUESDAY, NOV. 26, 2013
AGENDA • Housekeeping • Announcement: Schedule changes • Next Unit: Revising Literacies • What’s next
Goals for today • Talk about the fifth and final unit of the semester • Go over some important changes to the schedule…
REMINDERS and things • Grades for your disciplinary literacies paper will be given back to you by the end of the week, I promise! • Revisions for the disciplinary literacies paper and any subsequent project will need to be handed in before finals week.
Important dates—revised • I made a mistake and didn’t plan properly. • Presentations of final remix projects will be held the week BEFORE finals week. • That means the due date will be EARLIER. • Instead of being due 12/10, they will be due on 12/5. • That means presentations will be held over two classes: the last class period and during our scheduled exam day • Tuesday, December 10 at 7:45-9:45 a.m. We will be meeting at 8, though not 7:45…
Important dates—revised • That means, half the class will go on Thursday 12/5, and the other half will go on Tuesday 12/10. • So, we will sign up for presentation order in class today. • I suggest those that are further along to present on the 5th and those that need a little more time pick the 10th. • That also means that everyone has ~10 minutes to present their remixes—so use your time wisely.
Important dates—revised • Any questions?
UNIT 5 Revising literacies…
Revising literacies • So for the last unit, you’re supposed to write a reflective essay revising your definition of literacy. • We’ve talked a lot about what is considered a literacy • Hopefully your definition has broadened and you don’t just see it as strictly reading and writing—but an embodied practice that you exercise in different contexts: your own personal narratives, in different cultures and in your academic fields. • So basically, this paper asks: “how has this class changed your perception of “literacy” and how it functions in your life?” • Or, maybe your definition of “literacy” has stayed the same—write about that.
Revising literacies cont’d • So, that can be one approach for your last paper. • Or, you could write from a macro level, and reflect on the class in general and write about the things you’ve gained, referencing specific papers along the way • Think back to the first assignment I had you do where you wrote about your relationship with writing • Talk back to that and write about how that’s changed or how this class maybe reinforced the things you already knew • Whatever it is you write about, just make sure you reflect on the things you’ve done this semester in this class
Revising literacies cont’d • This paper is not high stakes at all, and it doesn’t even need to be excessively positive • I want you to be honest and write about what you really gained from this class, things that you will hopefully take with you into the future • Honesty within reason, of course. • So, pick whichever you feel is most relevant to you: 1) revising your definition of literacy OR, 2) a class retrospective • Whichever option you choose, it needs to reference specific examples from class (assignments, class periods, etc) and needs to be at least 3 pages,12 point font. • These will be due 12/10 and are worth 100 points.
Questions? • Any???
FOR NEXT CLASS • Continue working on your remixes • Start working on your reflections—both for the remix and the fifth unit.
